We are heartbroken to learn of the deadly attack earlier today at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where 3 people were killed in what law enforcement is investigating as a hate crime targeting the Muslim community. Two teenage suspects opened fire on the masjid and the Islamic school on the grounds before taking their own lives. Hate speech was found written on one of the weapons used. A security guard lost his life protecting those inside.
In the hours since, COPCP alongside the NYPD 75th Precinct and Inspector Abdullah of NYPD Community Affairs visited Masjid Al Aman, one of the largest masjids in our area.
NYPD Community Affairs Commissioner Foster also visited Baitul Mamur Masjid in Brooklyn, where worshippers were recently struck with eggs during Friday prayers, an incident Mayor Mamdani has condemned and the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating.
The NYPD has increased deployments to masjids across the city out of an abundance of caution. COPCP is in contact with our local precincts and masjid leadership and will be maintaining an increased presence in the community.
If you see anything suspicious, call 911 immediately. You can also call or text us at (646) 851-0885.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the Muslim community in San Diego.
